TCP and UDP comparison

     

TCP

  • Stream communication
  • Connection oriented
  •  Establish the connection first, this involves connection setup time
  •  No size limit
  • Reliable
  • Eg: Network services, Remote logging, File transfer

UDP

  •  Datagram communication
  • Connection-less protocol
  • Each time send datagrams, send additional data such as the local socket descriptor and the recieving socket address
  •  Size limit – 64KB datagram
  • Unreliable
  • Eg: Client/Server applications in distributed systems build over LAN
